Oscar's Orks

 

Hi folks,

At some point during the Christmas holidays my son and I put in a concerted effort to complete his 1000 pt Ork army. This project has been a slow grow because I didn't want to push him too hard and burnout. Towards the end, though, he was so excited to start playing games that we pulled some all-nighters. The result is an infantry heavy Goffs army with tons of character. It can zip in and steal objectives but hold them fairly well too. 

In regard to who-painted-what, the idea of the project was for Oz to learn painting skills as we went along, so to begin with he focused on base coats and initial layers, but by the end he was doing his own washes and highlights. He has constantly amazed me with his developing brush control. Here's some pics of individual units:

The little guy has also painted Ghazghkull Thraka and has a mob of 10 mega armoured Nobz to round out another 500 points. 

They'll take a while to finish though; for now he is just keen to play some games! More about that later...

Ghazghkull Thraka with the Boi!!

Blog posts have been few and far between this year, but that doesn't mean I have been sitting around doing nothing on the hobby-front. This month I worked with my son to finish off this monstrosity. The Boi is at the stage now that he can accurately lay down layers, including some very small details (eyes and glyphs, for example). He had his first go at dry-brushing and we spent a whole session working on highlights, which he was really proud of. 

He had a really good go at using washes, even though he spilt half a bottle of Nuln Oil. I had warned him about them and I always keep a wad of blue tac on the bottom of each bottle, but it somehow still ended up on the floor. He was a bit bummed until I showed him all of the posts on social media with people doing exactly the same thing 😂 To finish him off I added some edge highlighting and added the Goff's classic checkered pattern on the shoulder pads. In our games together he has been enjoying the using the Goffs and their exploding 6's (more about that later). 

He was super excited when he woke up in the morning and I had completed the final assembly. Both of us are very happy with the final result, particularly as we worked on it together and so many of the techniques used were his first ever attempt at the skill. I find the little guy's colour choices refreshing; there are a few things I would have done differently but this is his army and I wanted him to have that ultimate control over the scheme. "The boss needs his bling!".

I have been suffering from some decision paralysis when it comes to other projects; I just don't know what to work on. With DreadTober coming up I am thinking about switching back to my 9th Edition urban Dark Angels and getting them closer to completion. I have a Redemptor Dread ready to go as the centrepiece of that list. But I have also just got my hands on the new Tyranid Codex and have been adding a few more details to my swarm. Decisions, decisions...

Ork Rukkatrukk Squigbuggy TO-DONE!!!

 

Hi folks,

For Christmas last year my son received a GW gift certificate from his uncle. After very careful consideration at my FLGWS, he chose to bring home one of these squig buggy things. The selection suits him so well! Over the past 9 months we have assembled it and painted together in short bursts; you canonly hold the attention of an 8 year old for so long. This holidays he said he wanted to finish it off, so we made one last big effort to get it done. 

It is, with perhaps the exception of my Imperial Knights, the most complicated model I have ever been involved with. Thankfully, my son is fearless and just got stuck in. I had a good chat to him about sub-assemblies, because I couldn't think of any other way to do it that he wouldn't find completely frustrating.

He is a very happy grot with the finished project; I can definitely see the impact Splatoon has had on his paint scheme. During the project I was constantly impressed and surprised by his brush control, he is just a bit ridiculous for his age. I helped him with the very small detail on the faces and squigs, as well as some washes (he is afraid of spilling the bottles). I did some of the checker patterns as well, he is still learning how to do those. Here are some final shots:

Hopefully, I can keep his love of orks going for a while. You never know with kids, but I think this will be something he remains proud of, even if 40K doesn't end up being his thing.
