Van Diemen's World Veterans: Grog Ard-Nogg TO-DONE!!!

Hi folks,

I have realised that I am posting most of my WIP photos on other platforms, so the blog is looking a little sparse. I don't like that, because my main motivation for blogging is to have a record of the journey I take with these models. I'll have to do something about that in 2022, I think; these miniatures don't just paint themselves!

I spent 7 hours on Christmas Eve painting this Ogryn bodyguard for a good mate for Christmas. The model is a sculpt from Victoria Miniatures which I have to say have been great to us the past 6 months. Their new sculpts are really wonderful, shipping has been quick and customer service has been both thoughtful and personal. Everything you would want from a little miniatures outfit.

So... 5 minutes before we had to leave for the Christmas Party I was up to this stage of the job:

Gah!!! So frustrating!

Anyway, I had set the deadline with my family and I wanted to keep my word, so I held onto it for a couple more days (thankfully I had a back up present prepared; a newly released treatise on traditional samurai weapons).  Today we got together again to play some boardgames and I was finally able to pass the model on. Noticing an errant highlight, I had to sit down and do a quick correction, but after that I was really happy with the finish. See if you can spot the mistake that I had to fix ;-)

Over the next couple of days I am going to really try to push my 9th Edition Dark Angels army towards completion, starting with some Hellblasters. I also have some board game pieces to finish that I am fairly proud of, which I really need to get finished.

See you across the table,

Marc

Van Diemen's World Veterans: Heavy Weapon Squad TO-DONE!!!

H folks,

About 12 months ago The Trooper and I put a fairly big order into Victoria Miniatures to bolster his Imperial Guard collection (Astra Millawhatsits). I have been working on them ever since, in short bursts. I find Victoria Miniatures figures to be beautiful but challenging to paint. As a result, I hit quite a few stumbling blocks with these guys. During the last stages of painting the squad, I was spending 2 hours on each infantry model just to finish them off! That's why I don't collect Imperial Guard, I guess.

The autocannons themselves were completed a long time ago. They look a lot like Bren guns, a light support machine gun used by Australia in active service for a long time. I have painted the rounds with a blue tip to represent incendiary rounds (note also the blue stripe on the ammo boxes. The bases were done using dried soil from out near Parkes/Dubbo in central-western NSW. My mother-in-law went for a tour out there and collected soil wherever they stopped for me to use as basing material. All I can say is that I felt very loved!

See you across the table,

Marc

The Hobby Table: August 2020

Hi folks,

I feel like I need to write this post just to get back in the groove. This month has been exhausting at work and, while I have been busy doing some painting and modelling, I haven't been in the headspace to blog about it. Instead of pottering away on the blog, I have spent a bit of time on ebay snaffling some cheap additions to my 9th Ed. Dark Angels. I usually wouldn't do this, but took on an intern student this term which earned me a bit of money to spend. They don't pay you much (despite the huge amount of work it entails); just enough to fritter away on something fun.

On my table at the moment I have my September project for the 2nd Edition Army challenge: a full squad of Deathwing Terminators. I am hoping to finish painting them today, if I can. Either way, I have to get them done before the 25th of September. I have not quite perfected "white" yet, but gosh, I have put in a lot of hours. White glazes for days...

I am working on the arms and weapons now, which take a solid 30 minutes to do each. Gosh I love the Deathwing Sergeant sword. I have been waiting 25 years to own one of them.

A few more ebay purchases have rolled in over the past week or so, to help fill my 1000 point list, including a Lascannon Devastator NIB (my fingers are literally trembling), Dark Angels sergeant (with an old school plasma pistol: yay!!!)  a techmarine (so I can take a Dreadnought and Predator) and Brother Bethor. I have a Bethor figure already, which I use as my Assault Squad Veteran Sergeant. It is literally my favourite model and my own personal avatar on the battlefield. I couldn't bear to pull it apart to actually use as Bethor, so I bit the bullet and bought another one!

Wade and I played an intro level game of 9th Edition a few weeks ago and it was tremendous fun. Considering we haven't played in over a year, it felt so good to be across the table from someone again rolling dice. I got him some more Van Diemen's World Veterans for his birthday, so keep an eye out for them on my paint table over the next couple of weeks.

So... heaps going. I've been mucking about with 9th Edition Dark Angels lists, colour shift paints, Mechanicum on the Nintendo Switch, prepping an Ork Deffdread with The Boi, looking at Necron schemes with The Wifey and all kinds of other things I haven't posted about. Hopefully this resets the mojo and I can get back into it.

See you across the table,

Marc

Van Diemen's World Devils: Battlewagon TO-DONE!

Hi folks,

Today is ANZAC day; a day of remembrance in Australia where we honour the men and woman who have served in the armed forces. In case you aren't familiar with Australia's military history (I wouldn't expect you to be), our soldiers have served in many conflicts in support of the Commonwealth and other allies, and the defense of many nations. When an Australian travels through Europe, they are rarely far from hallowed ground; we are buried everywhere. To honour them, I have been working on some Van Diemen's World Devils for the past 12 months, an Imperial Guard regiment that strongly borrows from the iconic image of an Australian "digger" in a slouch hat.

Like the previous ANZAC day, I spent a bit of time working on my Van Diemen's World Devils and managed to get their transport finished. I started work on the "re-looted" battlewagon last year, in a frenzy of conversion work. Today I added the finishing touches to the driver, Colonel Clancy, the twin heavy bolters, exhaust and rear assault hatch.

Here you can see the layer of 'ardcoat I have applied to the "roo-shootin'" lamps. No kangaroos were shot during the creation of this battlewagon.

I added carbon scoring to the exhaust to maintain the dirty, weathered appearance.

The rear of the Battlewagon includes the assault hatch of a Black Templar Landraider. With Australia's convict history, it was fun to imagine they had "acquired" the hatch and put it to good use. I am sure they will give it back some day.

The troop compartment got a few more highlights, 'ardcoat on the computer screens and some splashes of Tamiya Clear Red: I thought if I was honouring sacrifice I should provide some evidence of sacrifice. Probably just a flesh wound...

Colonel Clancy is named after a character from "The Man from Snowy River", Clancy of the Overflow. Described as one of the greatest horse riders, he is the only one to encourage The Man from Snowy River as they prepare to chase the colt from old Regret:

"But still so slight and weedy, one would doubt his power to stay,
And the old man said, "That horse will never do
For a long a tiring gallop - lad, you'd better stop away,
Those hills are far too rough for such as you."
So he waited sad and wistful - only Clancy stood his friend -
"I think we ought to let him come," he said;
"I warrant he'll be with us when he's wanted at the end,
For both his horse and he are mountain bred."

"He hails from Snowy River, up by Kosciusko's side,
Where the hills are twice as steep and twice as rough,
Where a horse's hoofs strike firelight from the flint stones every stride,
The man that holds his own is good enough.
And the Snowy River riders on the mountains make their home,
Where the river runs those giant hills between;
I have seen full many horsemen since I first commenced to roam,
But nowhere yet such horsemen have I seen."

I love this part of the ballad, because it foretells what is to come. Clancy seems like a good bloke, so I made him the inspiring Colonel. The miniatures face also looks eerily like Jack Thompson, the actor who played Clancy in the film.

"Coo-ee- won't YOU come?"

The transport joins a small force comprised of a female infantry squad and Commissar. Next time I see my mate The Trooper I'll be passing them all on to him, to add to his Australian themed Imperial Guard (Astra Miliwhatsits) army.

Lest we forget,

Marc

Van Diemen's World Devils: Battlewagon Progress

Hi folks,

I gave myself an hour to see how much of my Van Diemen's World Battlewagon I could get finished. It turns out I can get quite a bit done! I started with a Nuln Oil wash over the olive armour plates and metallics, then used a short bristled flat brush to add Ushbati Bone highlights, which seamed to tie everything together. I also added some Runefang Steel highlights to the metallics and Shadow Grey to the blacks.

Next I added a blue jewelled effect to all of the little lenses (I'll give you a cookie if you can find all of them...).

The biggest job of the night was wet blending the roo shootin' lamps (note: I don't shoot kangaroos. I quite like them, unless they are jumping in front of my car in the middle of the night). I still need to clean up the shutters a little, because I got some white on them during the blending process. Avoiding this would have been more trouble than it was worth. When it is nice and neat, I'll whack a coat of gloss over the top to make it look like a big light bulb. I still need to paint the small headlights at the front, which will be tomorrow Marc's problem.

The next phase of the paint-job will include some weathering of the tires and rear assault ramp. I'm thinking of getting some red planet BASE! action going, because that would fit nicely with the Australian theme. I am also going to use a Black Templar decal on the assault ramp, because you don't just get Landraider doors from any old place. Let's just assume that they "borrowed" the door.

I also need to add some carbon scoring to the "smoke stack". Goodness knows how they get a battlewagon to run on steam, but I love the idea of it tooting in defiance as it unleashes all of those heavy bolters!

See you across the table,

Marc

Van Diemen's World Devils: Battlewagon Progress

Hi folks,

The weather isn't being kind to painters in Sydney at the moment. I attempted to use a spray primer yesterday and the paint was drying in the air between the can and the model! I have still managed to get some work done on my final Van Diemen's World project, the re-looted Battlewagon.

I started by priming it black, followed by an undercoat of Leadbelchers. Over that I painted a layer of Khaki from the Tamiya range. The camo was achieved using Devlin Mud, Thraka (Biel-Tan) Green and Seraohim Sepia washes, with some panels left Khaki. I then went a picked out some further details in Warplock Bronze and Abbadon Black. I still need to do some Leadbelchers touch-ups and a major black wash, followed by highlights. After that will come some weathering of the tracks and attachment/weathering of the wheels. There is also heaps of detail I need to pick out with spot colours, particularly in the rear tray: computer screens and lamps everywhere!

Thanks to the sequence of undercoats, I have already been able to scratch in some some bullet holes around the wagon. I need to add some darker streaks next to the cluster on the left, but overall I am happy with how they are turning out.

Hopefully the weather cools down enough next week for me to finish this monster off. It is a little bit late for Christmas but painting takes as long as it takes :-)

Dreadtober: Death and Rebirth

Brother Buliwyf bared his canines as the Storm Eagle jolted again. Wind shear bounced the armoured conveyance like an errant leaf in a winter storm. Hector did his best to guide it through the shifting gusts, but he was no Hephaeston.

“Beginning final approach. Prepare for disembarkation, tactical deployment omicron.”

Brother Carnis slapped Buliwyf’s auto-reactive shoulder pad and headed for the craft’s midsection. It was no secret that the Space Wolf disliked sub-orbital flight, even after all this time. “Come on Bull, time to go hunting.” Red light and grim preparedness greeted him as he entered the transport compartment. A platoon of Van Diemen’s World veterans were performing their final checks in the dim glow of the cabin. Their usual banter was subdued; they were perturbed. Carnis took the slouch hat from its webbing on the bulkhead and dumped it none-too-gently on the Commissar’s head, covering his eyes and roughing his hair. “Don’t forget your hat, Muldoon, we will not be going back for it this time.” The troops around them guffawed. There; better. Carnis took the ornate powersword from its sheath and activated it, adding its light to the red of the lumen strips. He also checked the cutting edge of his chainsword, noting the missing teeth, and revved its motor with a squeeze of his fingers. He had done his best to maintain the venerable weapon, but he was no Hephaeston.

The Ophidian Fist punched through the low cloud and its landing thrusters roared to life. Waves of force slapped the foliage down as it hovered, hunting for targets with its formidable targeting auguries. The side hatches dropped and the platoon of veterans deployed immediately, forming a defensive perimeter. The marines of Deathwatch Squad Hector emerged from the opposite hatch, hungry eyes roving. Buliwyf, with his heavy bolter strung with fetishes, Carnis, with his twin swords, and the Black Shield Librarian, Hyun. It was the latter who spoke first, saying what they all thought, as the whipping fronds around them crackled with hoarfrost. “We are too late.”  Buliwyf spat. Mounds of Orks, by the hundreds, lay messily dismembered. Their severed and exploded bodies oozed with mould and clouds of spores drifted from them. Amongst them, were the equally macerated remains of a Tyranid swarm. Biological acids were steadily reclaiming their scythed and clawed cadavers in morbid fumeroles. Towering over this panoply of carnage were the ruined walls of an Imperial fortress. It’s ceramite walls had been breached and re-shaped into a stygian mockery of their former glory. “Search pattern Theta. Execute.” With his warp-insight, Hyun could sense the faint echo of their Brother’s final stand here, but he could not make sense of it. He tried to track the Dark Angels last movements through the chaos, to read the logic in the combat-spoor, but he was no Hephaeston.

“We’ve found something. Bearing 35.3492 degrees North, 150.2651 degrees West.” The marines converged on the position in the forest, leaving the carnage of the battlefield behind them. Two veterans stood on overwatch around the bloated corpse of a massive Tyranid, whilst a third investigated its gaping maw, his head deep within.  “Report.” The veteran emerged, wiping mucous from his temple with the back of his wrist before replacing his slouch hat. “Tyranid. Monstrous class. Scythed Heirodule. No significant external injuries.” He grinned fiercely. “That’s not usually how it goes down.” He heaved the lip of the top jaw up, revealing the decomposing gums beneath. “And there is this.” Protruding from between two of its teeth was the unmistakable hilt of a combat knife, capped with a skull pommel. “Now, I’m not Hephy, mate, but that looks a hell-of-a-lot like a Mk IV Talon pattern combat knife with custom ray-skin grip and skull pommel…”. Buliwyf wrenched the knife out and inspected its edge. There; a tiny notch. His shoulders dropped.

The faint but unmistakable squeal of auspex brought them to their senses; the swarm had found them. Hyun immediately barked out orders: “CONTACT. Deployment Delta. Muldoon; fall back to the Fist. Hector, advise.” The distant roar of the Storm Eagles engines intensified as it prepared for combat. “Squad Hector, prepare to deny. On route 30 seconds. Lock down that auspex reading and prepare for strike package.” The Van Diemen’s troops melted into the forest, as they ex-filtrated rapidly towards the waiting gunship. Hyun drew his bolt pistol and turned to Carnis. “Bearing and size of contact?”. Carnis did not take his eyes from the shifting shadows and filtered light before them. “I do not know, I gave my auspex to Hephaeston when he left.” The auspex chimed again, more insistently, but still faint. Both Hyun and Carnis looked at the Tyranid corpse, as it suddenly took on much greater significance. “Buliwyf…?” but he was already moving, dragging the axe from the loop at his hip. The Space Wolf began hacking at the Tyranid’s armoured hide, creating a blizzard of Tyranitin chips with his frenzied assault. Carnis sheathed his swords and retrieved the dropped heavy bolter, as the first creature slid from the tree-line. He bared chiropteran incisors as he depressed the bolter’s handlebar trigger, shredding the forest in a storm of exploding micro-rockets. The creature buckled under multiple impacts, spurting ichor and bilious fluids. Buliwyf managed to cut a slab of armour free from the Hierodule, revealing the softer connective tissue beneath, which he slit with his combat blade. Smoke and ash poured out of the opening, pooling around his feet. The interior of the beast reeked of burnt flesh and ozone, making the Space Wolf stagger backwards warily. A large black form slid from the hole, accompanied by a blurt of chattering binary. “Russ’ beard, stop complaining Haest, we’ve been in worse places.” They hadn’t. The stinging rebuke was in harsh contrast to the wolfish grin that delivered it. “I have Hephaeston.” Hyun dispatched a gangrel stalker with his bolt pistol, then strode over to his brother's side. With a single fluid movement he flung the broken Techmarine over his shoulder. Hephaeston's armour was pitted with corrosion, stealing the lion’s share of its mass, as were the pitiful stumps of his legs. “We are leaving.”

“Give me that, pretty man.” Buliwyf ejected the glowing barrel of the proffered heavy bolter expertly, replacing it with a spare from his specialised backpack. “Get back to doing what you do best and stop stealing my thunder.” He opened fire, laying down brutally effective streams of incandescent bolts that cut two tall creatures in half and spun another into the undergrowth. Carnis swung his chainsword, clipping the frontal lobe from a scythe bladed drone. It could not stop itself from falling onto the point of his powersword, which split it from glottis to tail-tip. There; better. Hyun punched another drone over with an accurate bolt pistol shot, then unleashed a spear of warpfire that incinerated the rest of the brood. With a terrific crash, a colossal Tyranid gun-beast emerged from the smoke and splintered trees. It leveled its drooling artillery piece at Hyun, who bellowed his defiance, even as he shielded Hephaeston with his power-armoured form. Hephaeston emitted another, piercing, burst of code. They all heard his final words through their vox receivers: “I hear the pinions of Deathwing, coming to claim my soul.”

The Ophidian Fist unleashed its fury upon the Tyrannofex, lancing through its toughened hide with quad lascannon blasts, before cracking it open with a volley of missiles. A close range multi-melta blast incinerated the tottering remains, as Van Diemen’s World veterans laced the air with stinging las rounds from the ship’s side hatches. “Good shooting… Hector.” Carnis raised an eyebrow as he checked that Hector was indeed at the controls; the Black Templar looked rattled. “I am as surprised as you are.” He was a trained pilot but he was no…

Carnis glanced over at Hephaeston, as Hyun powered him towards the hovering Storm Eagle. The Techmarine gave him the briefest of thumbs-up, before finally succumbing to the agony of his wounds.

Van Diemen's World Devils: Infantry Squad TO-DONE!

Hi folks,

To commemorate ANZAC day, I have been working hard to get my Van Diemen's World Devils projects finished. The figures are cobbled together from a couple of Victoria Miniatures kits, apart from the Citadel Commissar who just has a fancy slouch hat. Painting them, I couldn't help feeling spoilt by the quality of Citadel miniatures. Victoria Miniatures are a great little company and they offer some amazingly characterful kits, but the figures were damn hard to paint!

The bodies and lasguns are all from the Victoria Miniatures Arcadian Female troops range, which have had their helmets removed and replaced by slouch hats form the Van Diemen's World Devils range. You can read about my terrible woes putting them together in an older post.

If assembling this squad was tricky, painting them was abominable. I think next time I do Astra Militarum I will have to take a bit more time. My plan with these figures was to speed paint them and then add some neat details. What I ended up doing was hours of touch-ups for very little pay off! Few of the edges on these figures were sharp, which made hard-lining/drybrushing less effective, and things like creases in the clothing were not well enough defined to take a quick wash and look good. Finally, whatever skills I had in painting eyeballs were not enough for this job. I can see some eyeball painting practice in my near future :-)

Here are few close-ups

Looking back on it, this little project was far more challenging than some of the others I have finished over the past couple of years. I definitely considered giving up on them a few times, but the fact that they were for a good mate stopped me. Australians like to think that this spirit of giving your all, so that you don't let your mates down, is unique to them. I'm not sure about that, but it has led us to do some courageous things under terrible conditions. On ANZAC day, that is something that we celebrate, as we remember those who gave so much more than a few nights of utter frustration painting eyeballs.

Lest we forget,

Van Diemen's World Devils: Transport Build Complete

Hi folks,

I was in my man-cave last night, scheming again, when a box of models under my painting desk caught my eye. It contained all of the units for an unpainted Ork army, that my friend Jimmy left after a game many years ago. I was marveling at one of the beaten up Battlewagons when I had a stupid idea... what would it look like if an Imperial Guard unit got some pay-back and looted an Ork vehicle? What changes would they make?

After asking Jimmy permission to commence tinkering, this is the pile of junk I started off with (sorry Jimmy, even the best Ork Battlewagon is a pile of junk), Apple laptop included:

I had a whole bunch of vehicle sprues to work with, including one from a Shadowsword super-heavy tank. I also had the wheel and suspension kit that I previously ordered from Victoria miniatures. The first step was to cut all the pieces that I needed off the sprues and do some important clean-up work on the wagon. This included removing about 40 rivets, filing random armour sections flat and widening the back door and fire-points. I also removed some Ork glyphs and flattened the front grill, as it was way too Orky. The exhaust pipe also had to go, it screamed Ork. Ditto the tyres; "if you have money to spend on your car, spend it on the tyres first."

Once that was done I start the construction phase. I added a new front armour plate using half a Landraider door with a dirty great winged skull on it and some scroll work, primarily because it looked a bit like a mustache. I added some lamps and searchlights, as well as a twin-linked heavy bolter mount from a Razorback. The exhaust was replaced with a chopped version of the lascannon from the Fortress of Redemption kit. This gave it a bit of a steam-punk look, like the Warhammer Fantasy Imperial war machines.

Colonel Clancy himself was made from a Stormsword crew member with a Van Diemen's World Devils resin head. I also added an open hatch cover, vox antennae and microwave transmission disc.

I closed off the driver's compartment with an internal Rhino door and added a computer console and stowed boltgun. Each open door in the drivers compartment got a heavy bolter implacement. I also added some extra armour pieces from the Shadowsword kit with more pintle mounted heavy bolters for good measure. I placed an ammo stockpile in the middle of the transport compartment, so that it can truly act as a defensible fire-point and closed the back entrance off with a second Landraider door.

I had to do quite a bit of work on the wheels to get them to fit, so at the moment I need to wait for some greenstuff to cure before I attach them properly. Some blu-tac gives you the idea though.

Now all I have to do is paint it...

See you across the table,

M4cr0
